Self-Care Tips for Women

Women As Caretakers

Women. We love, we take care, we support… and it’s usually the case that we’re loving, taking care of, and supporting others before (or rather than) ourselves. In our society, it tends to fall on the women’s shoulders to be responsible for our children, our pets, our parents, and even our spouses. What an amazing responsibility, and one that truly comes with ups and downs. BUT! So many of us could use some reminders and/or guidance on how to practice better self-care so that we can be in the best position to live up to these expectations and nurture our loved ones!

Self-Care Tips

Always giving and never spending time on ourselves can lead to feeling run-down, poor physical health/greater susceptibility to illness, being overly critical of ourselves, and low self-esteem. By making small changes to incorporate more self-care activities into our daily routine we can improve our overall health and well-being and be our best selves. Here are a few of my favorite ways.

Drink Tea (Specifically Lemon Balm)

  • A nice, steaming hot mug of tea is a perfect way to force yourself to slow down and take a few minutes for yourself. (Depending on the temperature, rushing these moments will only cause you to burn your mouth.) You can pair this activity with something else such as reading a book or just taking time to check-in with yourself and reflect.
  • While there are many teas with health benefits, lemon balm is highly recommended to reduce stress. “Lemon balm is a gift from God and Mother Nature to deal with our frazzling world” with its soothing properties.
  • Having lemon balm tea before bed will help calm your nerves and give you a better night’s sleep.

“Stress and insecurities often cause us to feel fearful about what’s around the bend. We find ourselves lying in bed at night, wondering what will happen to us and our families. If you’re worried about what the future holds for yourself and others, lemon balm can take the worry away and replace it with a sense of peace.” – Anthony William

Take Long Baths

  • Ahhh, warm water, peace and quiet, and time to think. Sound unrealistic? Perhaps, but it is well worth making it happen!
  • Add Epsom salt to your bath in order to relax your muscles and replenish magnesium in your body simultaneously. The salts are calming and grounding, just what our brains and bodies need after working through our busy schedule.

Meditation

  • As described in Medical Medium, “meditation is a state of being that rewires your subconscious to be more at peace, which heals your soul.”
  • Although commonly thought of as a time when a person sits cross-legged saying “ohm” and taking deep breaths, meditation actually includes any activity that “reaffirms your sense of self and helps you recharge.”
    • Examples can include using nature (bird watching, sitting by the ocean, fishing), exercise (walking, running, biking, swimming, yoga), music-related activities (dancing, singing, playing an instrument, simply listening), art (drawing, doodling, coloring, crafting, scrapbooking), and so much more.
    • Your first task is to find an activity where you can mentally “let go.” Disconnect from distractions (social media, email, household chores) even just for a few minutes to start. Your second task is to DO IT!

EFT Meridian Tapping

  • This is an exercise that can be very effective for taming the nervous system and shifting the body out of fight or flight. EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique, and it combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.
  • It works because as we tap on endpoints of meridians while saying certain statements, it sends calming signals to the amygdala of the brain to turn off the fight-or-flight response.
  • Go to The Tapping Solution for information on how to get started with this amazing mental health technique.

Final Thoughts

In the grand scheme of things, while many of us women are overwhelmed with the number of people and things we are responsible for managing, the majority of us take pride in our roles and would not have it any other way. In order to maintain this high level of loving, caretaking, and supporting, we must first make sure our own needs are met through self-love and care. Thank you, Anthony William, for dedicating your life to educating and sharing your wisdom on the importance of food and supplements to support the mind, body, and soul. It’s an amazing feeling to have tangible things we can DO to take care of ourselves so we can continue taking care of everyone (and everything) else!
