A Different Approach to Halloween
Halloween is here, and it’s just the START of all of the holidays that are simply loaded with So. Much. Food! (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa, New Year’s Eve/Day, Valentine’s Day, just to name a few holidays heading into late winter.) We absolutely love food around here, but as you can guess, we prefer HEALING foods that SERVE our bodies with PURPOSE!
Thinking back to four Halloweens ago when I was a new Mama… I was continuing my healing journey with new hope after everything else had failed me. At the same time, I couldn’t shake the worries I had for my son because he came out of my body—the body with LOTS of “symptoms” going on. I immediately applied everything I learned about myself from Medical Medium to him. I can remember feeling super emotional over Halloween and other Holidays, NOT because I ever wanted him to have the “junk,” but because I didn’t want him to feel different.
So what do we do about this particular holiday that is centered around going out and collecting as much candy as one can fill in a bucket (or basket… or bag… or pillowcase)?? We think outside of the bucket/basket/bag/pillowcase! (ha!)
Start by educating.
Naturally, a great place to start is with some education. We can and should take pride in teaching our child(ren) that in addition to great taste, there are so many reasons why we choose to consume fruits and vegetables throughout each and every day. Sharing specific examples such as how apples help us to flush out bad things from our bodies, or how dates give us energy and help our brains work at their best.
Without being too negative, we can also take pride in shaping our child(ren)’s choices by sharing that candy. Though it might taste good, it does not help our brains or bodies in any way. Our ultimate hope is that these MM kids can avoid having to “undo” a life of junk because they are informed from an early age. (So many thanks to Anthony William!!)
Try making the “Switch Witch” a tradition.
Several years ago, a friend and fellow practitioner suggested “Switch Witch” to me and it has become a part of our holiday traditions. It’s no different than Santa, the Easter Bunny, Elf on the Shelf, etc. in our house. The story explains that children must collect candy for the witch to fuel her home for the winter. The candy can then be exchanged for a desired item. One year in our house, it was date rolls, coconut water, and stickers. Last year my son wanted a red toy truck. I absolutely LOVE this tradition because it encourages the kids to be included and go trick-or-treating if they choose BUT allows an outlet for the things we really don’t want them to have. We also stock our house with lots of Halloween yummies such as honey straws, dried fruit, 100% fruit bars, caramel fudge squares, “no-bake balls,” kale chips, organic potato chips, pumpkin seeds, “SeaSnax” and non-food items such as silly glasses, bubbles, games, glow sticks, and stickers. Another option is to “buy back” the candy and have your child spend his/her money on items/activities of his/her choosing. However you decide to swap out the candy, if you haven’t read the Switch Witch story, check it out! Your kids will LOVE it!!!
If you’re wondering what to do with all of the candy once it’s in your possession, keep an eye out for locations near you that might accept it. Some dentist offices will take it (and often in exchange for a prize!), and some can be mailed to troops overseas.
Serve candy alternatives for trick-or-treaters.
When it comes to Trick-or-Treating, consider serving up some non-food items such as stickers, stencils, holiday-themed rings/bracelets/necklaces, bubbles, little balls or toys, and then make sure you put your teal pumpkin out so others can see! You will be SURPRISED at the number of children choosing non-food items, over candy. The Teal Pumpkin Project is an effort to bring food allergy awareness for kids with life-threatening food allergies, but it is super helpful for families on a healing protocol as well!
Bake, cook, and enjoy real food with a Halloween theme.
Rather than simply buying and collecting candy or other items, if you’re in the mood to bake or cook, try sharing the fun with your child(ren). There are so many compliant fall-friendly recipes out there. Some of our favorites are:
- Banana muffins
- Carrot muffins
- Anthony also recently shared a recipe for baked cinnamon donuts.
- Date fig cookie pie
You could also keep it simple by juicing some oranges and/or mangoes for a holiday-colored “Halloween” beverage. Or you could even do Halloween “nice cream” by using frozen orange-colored fruit and adding frozen bananas. Take it one spooky step further and make some Green Goblin juice/smoothies/”nice cream” using whatever greens you want to make them green and “ghostly.” Get some cool serving glasses or bowls and drink/eat up, Halloween style!
Last, but not least, have fun!
Whatever you do, just be sure to have some fun, make some memories, and feel amazing about utilizing another opportunity to teach your child how to benefit from healing foods. So many people believe that eating a diet full of #lifechangingfoods means “my child can’t have this, and can’t have that.” That’s absolutely NOT how we look at it, or how we feel. We choose to avoid foods that hinder the body’s response to dealing with the viruses, and toxicity we are all up against. We choose foods that are FULL of life, vibrant, colorful, and look the way we want to FEEL. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned on this journey is that we are what we eat! It’s not about deprivation, but about ABUNDANCE on Halloween and every day!
